FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN UKRAINE AND THE USA IN 2005–2008: US PATRONAGE, POLITICAL CHAOS AND DISILLUSIONMENT

The article analyses the peculiarities, dynamics and problems of Ukrainian-US relations after the Orange Revolution. The article highlights the positions and interests of the countries in relation to each other, as well as the main problems and the international context that influenced bilateral cooperation. It is concluded that the development of Ukrainian-US relations in 2005–2008 was unstable and contradictory. On the one hand, as a result of pro-Western forces coming to power in Kyiv, a qualitative breakthrough in relations between the countries took place and political dialogue was intensified. Under these conditions, the Bush administration provided extensive patronage support to President Yushchenko and his reform program. On the other hand, the continuing political chaos and the inability of the new Ukrainian government to implement the promised reforms led to rapid disillusionment with Washington and a reduction in US aid.
