COHESION FUND AS THE EUROPEAN UNION’S COHESION POLICY INSTRUMENT

The European Union’s Cohesion Policy is aimed at equalizing the member states regional development. It is financed from the EU structural funds: the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund, the Just Transition Fund, the Cohesion Fund. The last one was created as a result of the Maastricht Treaty adoption, and it focuses on the trans-European transport network modernization, environmental protection, and energy saving. The Fund’s activities are divided into four programming periods, of which 2014–2020 and 2021–2027 are the most successful in implementing initiatives. In the last programming period of 2021–2027, 15 EU member states, mainly countries of Central and Eastern Europe, will receive Cohesion Fund investments. The Cohesion Fund covers a significant part of the necessary financial resources through EU investments and national contributions of the state in which the initiative is implemented. The main objectives of the Cohesion Fund support are “United Europe”, “Europe closer to citizens”, “Greener Europe”. Examples of effective use of the Cohesion Fund’s financial investments are the programs implemented in Bulgaria, Latvia, and Poland.
