The article analyses the evolution of approaches to understanding the role of identity in state-building processes from the point of view of the institutional approach. The relationship between identity, forms institutional development and state capacity is established. In the first studies of the early stages of state formation, institutionalists hardly mentioned the role of identity in state building. Later, however, works appeared that confirm the thesis of the importance of identity politics in the formation of political institutions. When the elite, primarily the economic elite, was forced to take part in the Crusades, it contributed to the creation of extractive institutions by the rulers. The use of a wide range of quantitative and qualitative data to examine specific mechanisms has made it possible to clarify the importance of identity for the development of quality bureaucratic institutions.
