TRANSATLANTIC LEADERSHIP OF OBAMA AND CAMERON: IMPACT ON EU FOREIGN POLICY DECISIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CONFLICT IN UKRAINE

The article analyses the transatlantic leadership of Barack Obama and David Cameron in the context of the EU’s foreign policy response to the conflict in Ukraine. It examines how strategic cooperation between the US and the UK influenced the formation of a common EU position on the annexation of Crimea, the imposition of sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine. Particular attention is paid to the issues of Western unity, diplomatic pressure, and political mobilisation within the EU. The impact of military-technical assistance to Ukraine and the result of the lack of lethal weapons on the Russian leadership’s confidence in the impunity of its actions are assessed separately.The work is based on a comparative analysis of foreign policy initiatives, official statements, and practical actions taken by Washington and London in the period 2014–2016.
