NATIONAL IDENTITY: POSTCOLONIAL STUDIES IN THE DIMENSION OF THE RUSSIAN- UKRAINIAN WAR

The article provides a comprehensive political analysis of the transformational dynamics of Ukrainian national identity amidst full-scale Russian aggression. It is argued that postcolonial studies represent the most methodologically promising framework for researching these processes, as they allow for interpreting the war not only as a territorial conflict but as an act of epistemological decolonization and the overcoming of “diffuse identity”. The theoretical foundation of the work is based on a critical adaptation of the ideas of I. Wallerstein, J. Derrida, C. Doran, A. Loomba, D. Simon, F. Fanon, M. Foucault, R. Young et al, which enables the deconstruction of imperial myths regarding the “triune people” and asserts Ukraineʼs political agency within the framework of “postcolonial realism” (E. Sorensen). Particular attention is paid to the scholarship of Ukrainian researchers (O. Batalov, T. Zhurzhenko, L. Zalizniak, N. Kryvda, Yu. Polishchuk, V. Portnikov, O. Reznik, and L. Sarakun), whose works lay the foundation for understanding the specifics of Ukrainian nation-building in the conditions of the war crisis. The research methodology combines critical discourse analysis and a resilience assessment model based on the phenomenon of “identity fusion” (R. Sundberg, G. Gustavsson). The empirical foundation of the work comprises the results of representative sociological monitoring (Razumkov Centre, Sociological Group “Rating”, Gradus Research), covering the period of transformational shifts. The findings record a definitive break between Ukrainian society and postcolonial ambivalence and identify the value determinants serving as the foundation for the liberal-democratic transition. It is substantiated that the “identity of resistance”, formed according to the rhizomatic principle (G. Deleuze, F. Guattari), is transformed into a strategic factor of defense capability, converting individual engagement into high societal resilience. The conclusions emphasize that the preservation of identical unity appears as priority tasks of the national security policy in the context of countering the exhaustion of Ukrainian society and the intensification of hybrid threats from the Russian Federation.
