THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION AND REGIONAL INTEGRATION PROJECTS IN POST- SOVIET CENTRAL ASIA

The transformation of the architecture of international relations following the collapse of the bipolar system led to the intensification of regional processes in the post-Soviet space and the emergence of Central Asia as an independent subject of international relations. The attainment of independence by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan resulted in the consolidation of nation-centric models of state development and their integration into global and regional politics. The purpose of this article is to analyze the evolution of regional integration in Central Asia from the Tashkent Treaty to the activities of the Central Asian Cooperation Organization. The study substantiates the historical-geographical and political-economic organicity of integration processes in the region. It has been proven that Central Asian integration was evolutionary in nature and was largely restrained by the policies of the Russian Federation, which ultimately contributed to the absorption of regional initiatives into broader integration formats under the auspices of Russia and China.
