SOLUTIONS AND STRATEGIES FOR PRESERVING JOHN GREEN’S IDIOSTYLE IN UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION (BASED ON THE NOVELS “PAPER TOWNS” AND “THE FAULT IN OUR STARS”)

Abstract

The article focuses on investigating the strategies and solutions for preserving John Green’s idiostyle in the Ukrainian translation. The problem of idiostyle is discussed from the perspective of representing the individual creative manner of the author in the translation of works of fiction. The material for the analysis is John Green’s novels “Paper towns” (2008) and “The Fault in Our Stars” (2012), as well as the Ukrainian translations of the novels «Паперові міста» (2017) and «Винні зірки» (2017) performed by Vira Nazarenko. The methodology of the practical analysis is based on the contemporary theory of translation strategies (Vennuti), the choice of which influences the adequate translation of fiction (the foreignization and domestication strategies), as well as the translation solutions for implementing the selected strategy. In the article we employ the classification of the translation solutions, outlined by Vinay & Darbelnet and later complemented by Pym. The objective of the present research is to discuss the main features of John Green’s idiostyle and the strategies and solutions for preserving them in the Ukrainian translation. One of the distinctive characteristic features of the writer’s individual style is the use of slang words, since the target readers of the novels are teenagers. The subject of the article is the strategies and solutions, selected by the translator in order to represent the teenagers’ sociolect in the Ukrainian editions of the novels. The research has proved that the dominant translation strategy was domestication. In order to implement the selected strategy, to represent the teenagers’ sociolect, and to render the emotive, expressive, and stylistic coloring of the novels, the translator mostly employed the following solutions: modulation, correspondence, generalization, and cultural correspondence.
