LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC FEATURES OF CORNELIA FUNKE’S IDIOSTYLE AND THEIR REPRODUCTION IN TRANSLATION

This article explores the concept of «idiostyle» as one of the central aspects of linguistic stylistics, which allows for a deeper understanding of the writer’s creative work. It is noted that idiostyle is a dynamic phenomenon, formed as a result of the interaction of the author’s linguistic choices and the reader’s interpretation, and also depends on the genre and thematic features of the works. Special attention is paid to the study of the individual style of Cornelia Funke, a prominent German writer whose works for children and adolescents combine elements of the real and fantastic worlds. Her books have been translated into many languages and have gained wide international recognition.The paper analyzes the specific linguistic means that form the writer’s idiostyle, in particular, the author’s neologisms, which are used to create unique names for characters, races, and places in her books, as well as the polysemy and symbolic meaning of names and designations. Significant attention is paid to the use of idiomatic expressions and comparisons with the natural world, which helps to create vivid and expressive images, as well as the personification of inanimate objects, which gives her works a fairy-tale atmosphere. The article also highlights the problem of preserving the idiostyle in the translation process, since the adaptation of the author’s neologisms and intertextual connections in Funke’s texts requires from the translator not only a deep knowledge of the language but also sociocultural competencies. The analysis of translations of her works indicates the use of various translation strategies that allow conveying the unique features of the writer’s style. Thus, the analysis of the linguistic features of Cornelia Funke’s works allows for a better understanding of her style and creative approach, and also highlights the challenges that translators face when conveying the author’s original intent in other languages.
