VERBALIZATION OF THE CONCEPT RENEWAL IN INAUGURAL ADDRESSES BY AMERICAN PRESIDENTS: CONSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH

The purpose of the article is to identify linguistic means of implementing the concept of RENEWAL in the inaugural addresses of three American presidents: Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The speech of the newly elected president highlights their vision of the future of the whole country, reflects their stance and appeals to the key concepts of the citizens’ worldview.Concepts as mental formations reflecting human knowledge and experience have three components: perceptual, notional and evaluative. In speeches, these components are verbalised by morphosyntactic constructions, i.e. a pairing of form and meaning stored in long-term memory. The perceptual level of the concept RENEWAL is based on sensorimotor experience and is represented by constructions naming specific objects that are repaired or newly created.The notional component of the concept is coded by pairings representing improvements in various sectors of the economy, organisations and companies.The evaluative component of the concept represents properties relevant to the entire speech community. In Barack Obama’s inaugural, constructions verbalise all three levels of the RENEWAL concept equally, pointing to the improvement of the economy and education, job creation, and return to innovation, prosperity, and nationalism. Joe Biden’s speech contains more constructions describing the evaluative component of the concept. Donald Trump’s first inaugural has pairings representing all levels of the RENEWAL concept, underscoring the revival of the country and the core values of Americans. Instead, in his second address, Donald Trump used many constructions to represent the evaluative component of the concept, emphasising the restoration of the rights, freedoms and ideals of the American nation. The notional component of the concept is embodied by constructions identifying the return of the effective government, and the perceptual component is denoted by parings encoding the revival of jobs and changing the names of geographical objects.
