LINGUOPOETICS OF THE VISUAL PARTS OF PSYCHO-NARRATIVE (ON THE MATERIAL OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL “LIFE ON ANOTHER PLANET” BY WILL EISNER)

Abstract

The article examines the concept of linguopoetics as an individual field of study and its application of linguopoetic analysis in the graphic novel “Life on Another Planet” by Will Eisner. The concept of psycho-narrative is revealed, and its manifestation is demonstrated through the main characters of the graphic novel. The analysis of the interrelation between verbal and nonverbal components in this novel is conducted, and their functions in providing aesthetic impact on the reader are clarified. The article provides specific examples of fragments of linguopoetic analysis of the visual and graphic novel. All the main analysis points are accompanied by illustrative material. It is demonstrated that the linguopoetic content of the text is achieved through the combination of visual and verbal elements. For greater emotionality and expression, Will Eisner capitalizes his text and increases the font size in specific sentences for better emphasis. It is proven that the non-verbal channel of communication plays an extremely important role in the perception and understanding of multimodal text. In graphic novels, we can better interpret the author’s and characters’ moods than in ordinary texts because there is a constant interaction with colours, text placement on the page, and fonts. This interaction between the visual aspect and the verbal, and vice versa, gives the reader a complete understanding of what the author of the work intended to convey to the audience. The reader must be visually literate to correctly perceive and interpret the multimodal text. Only in this case is productive decoding possible.
