THE USE OF PARALLEL CORPORA TOOLS IN TRANSLATING STYLISTIC DEVICES

Abstract

The article discusses the use of parallel corpora as a tool for analyzing and translating literary devices in literary texts. Parallel corpora are a modern digital resource that allows for the systematic comparison of original texts and their translations into one or more languages, while providing the opportunity to objectively identify patterns in the transmission of semantic, stylistic, and emotional characteristics of artistic devices. The main focus is on the analysis of epithets, metaphors, and comparisons, which play a key role in creating imagery, conveying the author’s moods, and adding emotional color to the text. Epithets allow the author to form vivid images, emphasize individual style, and convey their attitude toward the subject of description. However, translating them is often a difficult task for translators due to cultural connotations, ambiguity, and differences in grammatical structures in different languages. The use of parallel corpora makes it possible to compare translations of epithets in different linguistic contexts, determine optimal translation strategies, and ensure that the emotional and stylistic impact on the reader is preserved. Metaphors, as one of the most powerful artistic devices, significantly influence the semantic richness of the text and create multi-layered associative images. They are often based on cultural or historical realities that have no direct analogues in the target language, and therefore require a creative approach in translation: the use of adaptation, calquing, or descriptive paraphrasing. Parallel corpora enable researchers and translators to identify strategies for translating metaphors, compare variants, and evaluate the effectiveness of their use in different linguistic and cultural contexts. Comparisons, as a stylistic device, help to strengthen arguments and create clear images and associations in the reader’s imagination. Their translation is complicated by differences in cultural symbols and associative series, which requires adaptation to the perception of the target audience. Parallel corpora allow for systematic analysis of the ways comparisons are conveyed in translation, evaluation of their effectiveness, and finding the most adequate solutions for preserving the semantic and emotional integrity of the text.
