WORD-FORMING POTENTIAL OF PHYSIOTHERAPY TERMS AS A COMPONENT OF PHYSICAL REHABILITATION

Abstract

The article examines the terminology of the microsystem of physiotherapy, which is used in Latin and English. The concepts of “physical rehabilitation”, “physical therapy”, “physiotherapy” were clarified. The word-forming and etymological potential of the terms of physiotherapy as a component of physical rehabilitation are characterized. It has been established that the composition of the terminological system of physiotherapy is irregular and is represented by derivatives, the word-forming processes of which are based on different ways of creating terms. A productive method is a basic composition that enables the concentration of information about the different properties of the designated object. The largest group consists of two- component terminological units, the creative basis of which is the Greek noun “θεραπεία”. Reproducing the generic concept, the noun classifies terms with the meaning of “treatment”: pelotherapía, English: pelotherapy – treatment with mud wraps and applications. The motivational feature in composite terms is highlighted by the bases of words of Greek-Latin origin. The second group in terms of number is multi-part constructions that descriptively highlight the use of natural and physical factors of treatment. Adjectives/adverbs in attributive term combinations reflect specific properties of factors affecting the human body: radiátio infrarubra, English: infrared radiation. In polynomial terms, the components of which are nouns, the core term is the carrier of the term’s conceptual content. Nouns in indirect cases, combined with the main one, specify or clarify the concept. English physiotherapeutic terminology is characterized by abbreviations and acronyms. This is due to the desire to convey the necessary professional information as succinctly and economically as possible.
