CORPUS-BASED APPROACH TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE VERBALIZATION OF THE CONCEPT OF DIGNITY IN UKRAINIAN AND ENGLISH MEDIA DISCOURSE

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of how the concept of DIGNITY is verbalized in Ukrainian and English media discourse. The relevance of this study lies in the need to examine the cultural, emotional, and cognitive dimensions of these concepts, as they embody social values, guide moral standards, and play a crucial role in contemporary media discourse. The main objective is to compare the ways in which dignity is expressed in English and Ukrainian, utilizing integrated dictionary and corpus analyses. This approach enables the identification of both the lexical representation of the concept and its actual usage in media environments, particularly in news texts. The methodology includes a detailed analysis of concept definitions in modern Ukrainian and English dictionaries, identification of key semantic components, construction of synonymic series, and evaluation of their frequency of use in corpora. Contextual analysis of the concepts DIGNITY/ГІДНІСТЬ was conducted using the Ukrainian corpus GRAC and the English corpus News on the Web. This enabled the identification of collocations and typical communicative functions of the concept across different media genres. The results showed that the concept of DIGNITY in Ukrainian and English shares a common basic semantic structure but differs in stylistic, emotional, and sociocultural nuances. In particular, English texts tend to use the term in a more formal and normative way, whereas Ukrainian media texts reflect a broader spectrum of emotional evaluations and individual and social connotations. The study’s conclusions emphasize the importance of a cross-linguistic comparative approach for a deeper understanding of concepts as culturalcognitive structures and open up prospects for further research in cognitive linguistics, linguoculturology, and media communication, particularly in the analysis of emotionally and socially significant concepts in contemporary media discourse.
