THE INFLUENCE OF OLD ENGLISH AND OTHER LANGUAGES ON THE FORMATION OF THE VERB SYSTEM OF MODERN ENGLISH

This paper examines the correlation between the etymology of two groups of verbs (regular and irregular verbs) in the English language and the possible factors that influenced them. To explore this topic, the origin of the group of irregular and regular verbs was analyzed, the average frequency of the origin of verbs from different languages was determined, and the relationship between the source of borrowing and the type of inflection was established. The connection between the history of the English language, namely the Old English period and the Middle English period, with the grammatical principles of those times and modern verb forms was investigated. The analysis was conducted to establish the possible reasons for specific word formation, transformation, and preservation of verb forms over a certain period. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that, despite the tendency to simplify the grammatical system in modern English, the division of verbs into regular and irregular remains permanent. The hypothesis that most irregular verbs in modern English are the legacy of the Old English period and Germanic linguistic heritage, while a significant part of regular verbs are of foreign origin, primarily French and Latin, or were formed as a result of later linguistic connections, has been tested. The source base of the study was authoritative etymological and historicallinguistic publications, which made it possible to achieve the research goal. The research material was a sample of 172 irregular and 74 regular verbs. The article uses methods of comparative-historical and etymological analysis and quantitative counting. The results show that the proportion of French and Latin borrowings in the group of regular verbs is significantly higher than in the group of irregular verbs, while verbs of Germanic origin are quantitatively predominant in the group of irregular verbs. Thus, the modern distribution of verbs by inflection type in English is closely related to the historical processes of its development.
