SUBJECT-FIELD LABELING OF TECHNICAL VOCABULARY IN TRANSLATION LEXICOGRAPHY OF THE 1960S (BASED ON THE UKRAINIAN-FRENCH DICTIONARY OF 1963)

Abstract

The article analyzes the features of subject-field labeling of technical vocabulary in translation lexicography of the 1960s, based on the first Ukrainian-French Dictionary published in 1963. The object of the study is technical and scientific-technical terminology recorded in the register of this general bilingual dictionary, while the subject of the research comprises the principles of its labeling, field differentiation, and the degree of consistency in the use of relevant labels. The paper examines the quantitative representation of technical vocabulary in the dictionary, characterizes the types of subject-field labels (tech., elec., phys., math., mar., aviat., etc.), and analyzes cases of combined labeling that reflect the interdisciplinary nature of technical terms. A comparative analysis with academic explanatory dictionaries of the Ukrainian language – the elevenvolume Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language and the twenty-volume Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language – made it possible to identify common and divergent approaches to the qualification and labeling of technical vocabulary in dictionaries of different types. It has been established that in the Ukrainian–French Dictionary of 1963 subject-field labeling performs not only an identificational but also an explanatory function, orienting the user toward the professional domain of term usage, which is not typical of general bilingual dictionaries. Particular attention is paid to technical lexical units without subject-field labels and to the reasons for their unmarked presentation. It is concluded that the dictionary under analysis occupies an intermediate position between a translation dictionary and a terminologically oriented reference work, and that its subject-field labeling practices reflect the lexicographic and scientific-technical priorities of the period. The results of the study may be used in further research on the history of Ukrainian lexicography, terminology studies, and issues of labeling specialized vocabulary.
