Abstract

The article examines the specifics of constructing and representing Ukrainian cultural identity in the English-language memoir «The Rooster House» by Ukrainian-American writer Victoria Belim. The concept of cultural identity is analyzed under the conditions of forced and conscious residence in a foreign cultural environment, where identity emerges as a dynamic, unfinished process of «becoming», constructed through family memory, linguistic codes, and symbolic toposes. The article considers the potential of linguoculturological and discursive approaches to redefining the Ukrainian self for a global English-speaking audience. The study is based on conceptual and critical discourse analysis of V. Belim’s memoir text, as well as connotative and culturological analysis of the toposes of trauma. The theoretical concepts of A. Smith, H. Bhabha, S. Freud, S. Hall, and the works of Ukrainian researchers (V. Aheyeva, M. Riabchuk, and others) are involved. It is proven that the lexeme «identity» in the text reflects the evolution of the author’s consciousness from emigrant hybridity («melting pot») and the identity crisis of 2014 (the family «tapestry» metaphor) to a conscious decolonization of her own self. It is established that the topos «home» transforms from an administrative-geographic location (Brussels, Chicago) into an inner existential refuge (Kyiv, the village of Bereh). The identified linguistic interference (specifically in the phrase «At home my husband washes the dishes») testifies to the presence of a Ukrainian mental picture of the world in an English-language text. The linguistic and discursive means of representing Ukrainian cultural identity in V. Belim’s English memoir «The Rooster House» have been systematized and analyzed systematically for the first time. The specifics of the functioning of transcultural autobiographical prose as a platform for translating specific Ukrainian, everyday, and historical codes for a foreign reader are outlined. Practical significance of the study: The results can be used in developing specialized courses in linguoculturology, discourse analysis, translation theory, transcultural literature, and memory studies, as well as in writing academic papers devoted to the analysis of contemporary Ukrainian diaspora prose.
