MODELING THE PATHWAYS OF GERMAN LEXICAL BORROWINGS INTO THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE AND THE STATUS OF BORROWED WORD FORMS

The article is devoted to the problem of the ways of spreading lexical borrowings from or through the German language into Ukrainian. A review of previous research in this field is made and six main ways of spreading foreign words from German or through it into Ukrainian are modeled. Two of them involve borrowing German lexical elements directly from German or indirectly. For the other four ways, German serves as a kind of bridge in the dissemination of lexical units and their forms eastwards, having first undergone assimilation. It is the role of German as a source language or intermediary language in German-Ukrainian language contacts that allows us to trace three types of mediation of third languages in interlingual contacts, which allows us to more clearly distinguish the stages of possible borrowing paths and probable intermediary languages. To study borrowed lexemes from German, it is necessary to take into account not only the assimilated forms in intermediary languages, but also the original forms of distribution, their semantics in dialects and individual dialects of German, as well as the possibility of the distribution of foreign lexical units from the “language islands” of the Carpathians. The functioning of several forms of one lexeme in the German language is explained by the fact that it existed for many centuries in the form of a number of small dialects. Also, based on the theory of the pluricentricity of the German language, it is possible to distinguish national variants of the German language borrowed from Slavic languages, and taking into account historical and dialectological studies is an important component in the study of German borrowings in diachrony. Tracing the ways of borrowing the forms of each lexeme from the German language, it is advisable to consider the status of the learned word forms, as well as the method of their assimilation in the source language, the intermediary language or languages, and the recipient language or languages, because often different forms become literary in different languages. Some fall out of use, and some replenish the lexical composition of territorial or social dialects of Slavic languages.
