THE POETIC TECHNIQUE OF MORPHOLOGICAL JUXTAPOSITION IN LYRICS BY VASYL STUS

Abstract

The article deals with the axioms of the poetic works study, which were formulated by well-known researchers of the morphological level of poetic language: the axiom of expressiveness, the axiom of paradigmaticity, the axiom of integrity (compositionality), the axiom of intentionality. A number of study principles and description of the grammatical level of poetic language, which were developed on the basis of these axioms, were applied to the analysis of the poetic works by Vasyl Stus. The article considers the universal morphological and poetic method to actualize grammatical units in the artist’s poetic works – morphological juxtaposition, which is defined as the morphological close arrangement of language units within a small space of a poetic text. Among the general poetic methods of actualization, morphological juxtaposition is the most active in terms of the frequency of its functioning in a poetic text. In the poetic works by Vasyl Stus morphological juxtaposition is recorded in two types of word combinations. The first type comprises stable traditional expressions that convey the idea of accumulation, typicality. The second type represents authorial combinations in which the repetition of the root creates additional meanings in the reflection of typical actions and processes. The author’s choice of morphological units that are used in juxtaposition is noted: they are grammatically marked units (the imperative verb form, the vocative noun form, the substantive binomial), rarely used and occasional words. A conclusion is made about the author’s individual creative use of general poetic methods to actualize morphological forms and meanings, the juxtaposition of morphological units in particular, and a number of author’s methods to actualize and neutralize grammatical meanings are characterized. The prospect of the study is to determine the grammatical means chosen by other Ukrainian poets of the sixties when creating texts to implement an artistic idea.
