LINGUOSTYLISTIC EFFECTS OF ENGLISH BORROWINGS IN CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN MEDIA DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article investigates the linguostylistic effects of English borrowings in contemporary Italian media discourse. The research is based on a corpus of 100 texts from the leading online newspapers «La Stampa», «La Repubblica» and «Il Giornale», which cover events in the fields of technology, politics, economics, culture, gastronomy, entertainment, sports, and fashion. Special attention is given to the functional role of anglicisms, their integration into the context, and their stylistic potential within eight selected conceptual spheres. The methodology includes linguostylistic analysis, which makes it possible to trace how borrowed lexical units create language effects and increase the communicative attractiveness of the text. Pragmatic analysis is used to identify the authors’ communicative intentions, the specific features of speech behavior, and the patterns of anglicism use in media discourse. In addition, structural analysis helps reveal the connection between anglicisms and the context within the overall system of the text and shows how they function as part of its information structure. The study shows that most anglicisms function as universal naming units that are stylistically neutral. They help ensure fast information exchange, precise naming, and communicative economy, and they contribute to the unification of globalized media texts. Linguostylistic effects caused by English borrowings appear relatively rarely and are mainly limited to the areas of technology, politics, economics, culture, sports, and fashion. Some adapted and morphologically hybrid forms still keep their expressive character, create a sense of linguistic novelty, and serve as a stylistic tool that highlights the text, attracts the reader’s attention, and emphasizes its communicative importance. The results of the study support the concept of media discourse hybridization and demonstrate the pragmatic orientation of modern information texts. In this context, anglicisms mainly perform naming and informational functions, while their stylistic potential is activated only in specific situations, transforming expected meaning frames and strengthening the perlocutionary effect of the statement.
