This paper addresses the specificity of the empathy motif in Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Klara and the Sun” through the prism of its key and accompanying imagesymbols, along with thematically related tropes, which jointly shape this motif within the framework of philosophical and ethical problematics of dystopian fiction. The novel, narrated in the first person by a solar-powered girl-robot ‒ an artificial friend and companion to another of the novel’s heroines ‒ problematises manifestations of empathy and its absence in a dystopian world. The paper suggests a model of the novel’s imagery system comprising key (Klara, the Sun) and accompanying (the Beggar Man and his dog, the Store, the Hill) image-symbols related to the empathy motif, each of them being associated with one of the novel’s basic philosophical and ethical issues, those of technological alienation, class segregation, and ecological crisis. The unfolding of the above motif is to a great extent grounded in the interaction of metaphorical and metonymical tropes used to create Klara’s metaphtonymic image (ARTIFICIALITY / CONSTRUCTEDNESS stands for NATURALNESS → A CONSTRUCTED ANTHROPOMORPHIC ARTEFACT IS A HUMANE BEING) and the personified Sun’s image (LUMINARY BODY IS A PERSON; EMPATHY IS NOURISHMENT / LIGHT). The accompanying image-symbols foreground the social, liminal, and trial-related dimensions of the android’s empathy via the chain of metaphors and metonymies: HOMELESSNESS stands for LONELINESS; EMPATHY IS CLOSENESS / ATTACHMENT; UNDERSTANDING IS SEEING / OBSERVING; EMPATHY IMITATION / CONSTRUCTION IS A COMMODITY; EMPATHY IS BRIDGING THE DISTANCE / TRAVELING ANOTHER’S PATH; THE STORE stands for WELL-BEING; SACRIFICE IS ACTION. Synthesising the Genre theory of dystopia, the main assumptions of Сognitive poetics and Theory of imagery, along with the Conception of literary symbolism, will foster a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind the literary representation of empathy viewed through the lens of society technologisation, as well as searching the ways of interpreting various linguistic and literary phenomena within the philosophical and ethical context.
