LITERARY REPRESENTATIONS OF IDENTITY IN GERMAN LITERATURE OF THE 20TH AND EARLY 21ST CENTURIES: DYNAMICS AND TRANSFORMATIONS

The article analyzes the evolution and modes of artistic modeling of individual and collective identity categories in German prose and drama of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Based on the study of the theoretical triad of identity as an element of consciousness, a product of social interactions, and a verbal-symbolic construct, the genesis of this problem is traced in the works of H. Hesse, H. Böll, and B. Brecht. Particular attention is paid to the transformations of literary discourse during the “Turn” era (Wende-Literatur) of the 1990s (W. Hilbig, D. Grünbein, L. Kusche) and in the prose of the 2000s (H. J. Schädlich, K. Lange-Müller, E. Hummel, Y. Tawada, J. Erpenbeck). It is established that the formation of the phenomenon of “blurred” identity at the turn of the century was preceded by the sudden collapse of the GDR’s ideological markers, which triggered a diffusion of subjectivity and a deformation of the mimetic foundations of realism. At the same time, in the works of 21st-century authors, identity paradigms shift toward quasi-biographical and family reflections, where the overcoming of transgenerational psychological traumas becomes a key factor in selfidentification. It is proved that the leading factor in constructing the identity of the “Self” in German literature is the narratives of memory (individual, family, and cultural), which are actualized in response to historical traumas caused by the functioning of totalitarian regimes (Nazism, Soviet communism) and geopolitical disruptions at the turn of the century. Through the prism of such retrospection, the “paradox of home” and the metaphor of forced displacement, which determine the fragmented consciousness of the modern individual, are captured. The phenomenon of identity is conceptualized through the lens of the “Self-Other” dichotomy, existential fear, disorientation, as well as the determinants of “blurred” identity and “quasi-identity” in the artistic space of contemporary European literature.
